- December 17, 1944: The German Ardennes Offensive shifted the 44th to a defensive posture, once Simserhof was captured. As other forces were redirected to stop the Germans in the Bulge, the 44th defended an expansive front. The 44th is temporarily reinforced with a 4th Regiment, the 253rd.
